Who Is Greenwich's Lower Back Pain Expert Darren Higgins?
Darren Higgins is the number one low back and pelvic girdle pain expert in Greenwich. Brought up in a very active family, he was born and raised in a small country town in South Australia called Goolwa.
His dad played Aussie Rules football, while his mum and two sisters played both netball and tennis. Darren was a competitive swimmer and active and promising gymnast.
Both his parents suffered from back pain throughout their lives, as well as other various sports injuries, as did Darren and his siblings. An interest in returning to good health and fitness was instilled in him from an early age after spending a lot of time at his local physiotherapy clinic. During his formative years, Darren was amazed at how a physio was able to help his family get rid of their pain and return to the stuff that they love doing.
As a teenager, he knew he wanted to help people exactly the same way as my parents had been helped.
And so here he is, now a physiotherapist with over 30 years of experience helping people get rid of their back pain.
After completing physio training in Adelaide, Australia, he moved to the UK in 1996 and has been the proud owner of the Vanbrugh Physio Clinic in Greenwich, London since 2000.
He lives with his husband in Islington, North London and they are the proud parents of three rescue cats.
A competitive swimmer in his teens, Darren still enjoys swimming as part of his fitness and well-being regime which also includes going to the gym and skiing. He has also recently trained as a clinical Pilates instructor, an amazing addition to his skill set to help people recover from low back and pelvic pain.
Being pain free and mobile are absolutely crucial to enjoying life and Darren knows this first-hand.
As a young new grad, he injured his back at work, while working with a lady who was recovering from surgery. Walking and mobilizing her, she went to sit down a little too quickly on her chair. His instinct was to reach out and help her and Darren pulled his back, leaving him in pretty bad pain.
Following a week off work, the physiotherapy team at the hospital where he was working at the time put him back together and he’s been in fine condition ever since.
Outside of work, Darren loves traveling with his husband, exploring new places, new cultures and new cuisines. Back in 1997, he spent a year in Denmark, learned to speak Danish reasonably fluently, and still maintains strong connections with friends and family there.
In the last year, to add an extra layer to his passion for travel, as he started to learn Italian to really immerse himself in the culture and country.
Why is Darren Higgins known as the Leading lower back pain And Sciatica?
Over the past 30 years of his professional career, Darren has worked with thousands of people who’ve been suffering from low back and pelvic pain, people who are living with constant pain, not sleeping well at night, waking up tired and exhausted and unable to work properly.
Sitting makes their pain worse, they’re often feeling depressed and anxious. It’s stopping them from doing the things they love, taking part in a wide range of sports, running and playing with their kids in the garden.
It stopping them from enjoying spending intimate time with their partners, often they’re also avoiding social occasions because they’re in just too much pain. They are also truly fearful, scared of what the future holds. Is it permanent pain? Are they going to be disabled? Are they going to be unable to enjoy life?
Those feelings and fears are pretty terrible ones to harbour.
Many of these people have been living with their pain for way too long. They’ve seen their GPs, specialists, and sometimes other health professionals and been told often that their pain will go away by itself, just by taking painkillers and some anti-inflammatories. They’re told that their back pain is quite normal and that everyone gets a little bit of back pain in their life. They’ve also been told that the lengthy NHS waiting lists mean that people are going to wait for months and months to see a physio or a specialist.
Hands on treatment, or manual therapy as it’s known in the physio world in the NHS, is pretty much a dirty word. Patients are often given generic advice and exercises that aren’t specific to their particular experience. You won’t be surprised then to hear that these patients don’t do well. They don’t respond to treatment and end up with more chronic problems, more chronic pain.
And then the only answer in the NHS is to prescribe stronger and stronger drugs. Some of these patients go on to have injections, nerve blocks and even surgery, most of which could have been avoided with early assessment, expert diagnosis and holistic physio approach and rehabilitation program.
